PhD Academies

The Globelics PhD Academies are one of the network’s most important capacity-building activities. Designed for doctoral students working on innovation, learning, competence building, science, technology, and development, the academies provide an intensive space for training, mentoring, academic exchange, and community building.

Historically also known as International PhD Schools, these academies bring together young researchers from different regions of the world with senior scholars from the Globelics community. Through lectures, paper presentations, feedback sessions, group discussions, and informal exchanges, participants strengthen their research projects while becoming part of an international network committed to innovation and development studies.

Over the years, more than 300 PhD students from across the globe have participated in Globelics PhD Academies. The location of the academies has shifted between the Global South and the Global North, reflecting the network’s commitment to balanced global participation, diversity of perspectives, and mutual learning across contexts.

The PhD Academies play a key role in supporting new generations of scholars. They help doctoral students engage with frontier debates, receive guidance from experienced researchers, build long-term collaborations, and connect their work to broader discussions on development, policy, and social transformation. In this sense, they are not only training programs, but also spaces where the future cohorts of the Globelics community are nurtured.

This section presents the history of Globelics PhD Academies, including their locations, dates, academic programs, senior lecturers, participating students, and related materials. Together, these academies show Globelics’ long-standing commitment to capacity building, intergenerational dialogue, and the development of a truly global research community.
