Call for Papers: Innovating with and for the Marginalised – Inclusive Innovations in Innovation Systems

A special issue exploring how inclusive innovation and innovation systems can address marginalisation, inequality and unmet needs, with particular attention to the Global South.

The Journal of Innovation Economics & Management invites submissions for a Special Issue entitled “Innovating with and for the marginalised: inclusive innovations in innovation systems.” The issue seeks to advance theoretical, methodological and empirical research on the relationship between inclusive innovation, marginalisation and innovation systems.

The Special Issue is guest edited by Vanessa Casadella (University of Picardie Jules Verne, France), Suzan Cozzens (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA), Natalia Gras (University of the Republic of Uruguay, Uruguay), and Judith Sutz (University of the Republic of Uruguay, Uruguay).

The call starts from the premise that innovation should not only contribute to competitiveness and economic performance, but can also address social justice, inequality and the development of human capabilities. In this context, inclusive innovation is understood as innovation directed toward problems affecting marginalised populations and as a potential means of transforming development trajectories rather than simply compensating for exclusion.

The Special Issue particularly encourages contributions based on research conducted in the Global South, while also welcoming studies from the Global North and comparative approaches. It invites researchers to examine how innovation systems can enable or constrain inclusive innovation and how marginalised communities can participate in identifying problems and designing, producing and disseminating solutions.

Contributions may address three main thematic areas: theoretical and conceptual foundations of inclusive innovation; public policy, governance and participatory processes; and empirical approaches focusing on sectors, territories, measurement and fieldwork. Relevant topics include innovation policy for equity and social justice, collaborative governance, grassroots and frugal innovation, digital technologies, basic needs, informal economies, agriculture, health, education and methodologies for assessing inclusion and marginalisation.

By bringing together these perspectives, the Special Issue aims to contribute to a better understanding of how innovation systems can move beyond conventional economic objectives and support more inclusive development pathways.
